The Week Ahead in TV

Things are starting to kick into high-gear now with the introduction of three high-profile reality shows and the finales of several others:
SUNDAY
Sunday Night Football (7pm EST on NBC): TV sales will increase once women realize that football season will contend with Desperate Housewives.
FOX Comedies (starting @ 8pm): Those men not already watching football—and/or live on the West Coast—will have a line-up of father-oriented comedies to watch: The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and The War at Home.
MONDAY
9/11 Anniversary (various): Most of the networks will choose to pay tribute on the 5-year anniversary. Other programming will most likely be interrupted by a scheduled Pres. Bush speech at 9pm EST.
TUESDAY
Big Brother (8pm on CBS): The finale between Mike Boogie and Erika. Sadly, someone has to be chosen the winner. Maybe they can just have each other.
Dancing with the Stars (8pm on ABC): The 2-hour debut of the ABC powerhouse. Am I the only one who believes that Mario Lopez still deserves some karmic embarrassment for cheating on Ali Landry before their wedding?
WEDNESDAY
Today Show (NBC): The debut of Meredith Vieira. I’m betting she’s happy to have a little more testosterone in her life.
Rock Star: Supernova (8pm on CBS): The winner will be announced. If Dilana doesn’t win, I’ll be boycotting CBS.
THURSDAY
Survivor: Cook Islands (8pm on CBS): My 24-hour boycott of CBS will have ended when I return to watch this controversial racial experiment. Being 1/2 Asian, 1/2 Hispanic…I’m not sure which team I will root for. I just know that if those two tribes merge, the other groups could be in a world of hurt.
SUNDAY (9/17)
The Amazing Race 10 (8:30pm on CBS): Twelve teams of two will depart from Seattle and travel around the world. Twelve teams of two will also be that much closer to Phil Keoghan than I will ever be.

Dancing With the Stars Lineup Announced

I managed to escape getting hooked entirely on Dancing With the Stars last season, but did watch the finale for some reason and found it moderately entertaining. The next round of celebrities for the third season of Dancing With the Stars has been announced, so maybe I’ll be giving the show another look. So, we have Tucker Carlson of MSNBC (see pic, right), talk-show host Jerry Springer, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Hamlin (you may remember his better half in the competition last season), Joe Lawrence (sans the ‘y’ so he’s all grown up now), Mario Lopez, singers Sara Evans and Willa Ford, Monique Coleman (of High School Musical), Shanna Moakler, and football star Emmitt Smith.
If you’re unfamiliar with the show, there are 11 pairs competing for some lame-o dance trophy and bragging rights. As with these types of shows, the celebrity label is often used liberally, but each semi-famous person is paired with a professional dance partner. Both judges scores and viewer votes are combined to determine one couple to eliminate each week. Look for Dancing With the Stars this fall—premiering on September 12th on ABC.

Singing…With the Stars

People just love to see celebrities boxing, dancing, ice skating…and now, singing. Fox TV has announced the professional songbirds that will be paired with celebrities on the new show Celebrity Duets. The big names include: Chaka Khan, Clint Black, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Brian McKnight, Macy Gray, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, Randy Travis, and Aaron Neville. The series premieres with a two-hour show on August 29th, and will follow the model of American Idol, allowing judges and viewers to cast their votes for elimination. The b-list
celebrities have not yet been announced, but composer David Foster will be one of the judges. Well, it seems to have a bit more potential than the celebrity skating debacle. I mean, Kenny Loggins and Richard Marx? Gold, baby.

Teen Choice Awards Voting Open Until August 11

This week teens can vote for their favorite stars in the Teen Choice Awards.
Nominees include new celebs such as Brandon Routh of Superman Returns and American Idol‘s Katharine McPhee, as well as familiar faces like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and pop culture icons Flavor Flav (Flavor of Love) and Hulk Hogan (Hogan Knows Best).
The competition between Laguna Beach‘s Kristin Cavallari and Lauren “LC” Conrad continues as they are both nominted for Female “Choice Reality Star”.
Also nominated for an award is Jessica Simpson, her ex-brother-in-law Drew Lachey (for his stint on Dancing with the Stars), and many more.
The awards will air on FOX, August 20 at 8:00 EST, following a “red carpet” pre-show at 7:30. Ballots are available on-line at Teenpeople.com, MySpace.com, IGN.com and FOX.com. Voting will run until August 11 and is open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 19.

ABC’s Free Internet TV Trial Run a Success

Disney announced on Monday that ABC.com’s trial run of free TV episodes streamed online has been a success. The episodes included 30-second advertisements, and, apparently, an online exit survey from the first week of the trial showed that 87 percent of respondents could remember the products advertised in the ads. Execs are so pleased that a reworked version of the current site will appear in the Fall. In fact, not only did the free episodes outperform the $1.99 ABC episodes offered on iTunes, but actual televsion viewership increased rather than decreased during the trial period. The trial run will still end on June 30 as originally planned. As much as I like the iTunes model, I can see why this is working. Like my mom says, “If it’s free, it’s for me!”

Vivica A. Fox to Dance With the Stars

Rumors have been circulating for months about the hit show’s next lineup—and now at least one star has been announced. Actress Vivica A. Fox has confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that she will be strutting her stuff for Dancing with the Stars. The actress, who will start practicing her moves at the end of July, is quite familiar with what it takes to physically prepare for a role. She proved she was in fine shape when she starred in the popular action flick Kill Bill. Of course, her choreography will now consist of twirling with a male partner as opposed to fighting a female adversary. Other stars rumored for next year’s show include Mario Lopez and Harry Hamlin (Lisa Rinna’s husband). ABC has yet to confirm any of the performer details.

Dancing With The Stars’ Master P Faces Felony Conviction

Rapper and reality television star Master P has been charged with a felony for carrying an unregistered gun. Master P’s attempts to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor failed.
In a video on TMZ.com, Master P sits in court sporting a camouflage jacket listening to officer Ethan Shear testify how he pulled a gun on the brothers after spying two handguns in the car they were driving. One revolver was seen underneath the seat of the driver, Vyshonn Miller, while the other was on the passenger seat, where Master P was sitting.
“[Master P] was not cooperating,” says the officer. “He was continually looking out, looking back at us to see where we were at, which is a common thing for a suspect to do before they flee, so we were concerned about that.
“I ordered him out of the car several times. He finally opened the door but then began reaching back into the car towards the center console area. Several officers yelled for him to put his hands up. On the front passenger seat was the blue steel semiautomatic handgun.”

The surprise smash hit of last season, ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, returns Thursday, January 5th, at 8pm. Nearly obsessed with the controversy over the winners chosen last season and the subsequent “dance-off,” fans are no doubt ready for some fireworks this time around. This season will feature a diverse mix of celebrities, including the always-tan George Hamilton and the always-dramatic Tatum O’Neal. ABC gives some hints about new developments for the second season, saying “This season of Dancing with the Stars sees 10 couples taking to the floor on the first show—and one will be knocked out in the very first week! There’ll be more dancing, more well-loved classic tunes and lots more rhinestones.”
